This project develops a GeoAI-based framework for measuring AI-related cooperation, competition, and innovation across global subnational regions using large-scale news data. It connects relational measures of technological activity with debates in economic geography, urban AI, and regional development.

MOBI-TWIN: Spatial Mobility and Regional Transformation in Europe’s Twin Transition

Role: Postdoctoral Researcher, 2025–present
Institution: University of Groningen
Funding: Horizon Europe

MOBI-TWIN examines how digital and green transitions reshape spatial mobility, regional inequalities, sustainability, and resilience across European regions. Junyao develops spatial microsimulation and agent-based modelling approaches, contributes to scenario-based assessments, and studies how structural change alters regional opportunity, mobility patterns, and uneven development.

His work links complex systems modelling with economic geography and place-based policy, combining EU microdata, spatial analysis, network methods, and interpretable modelling.
