Abstract

This chapter investigates how citizens gain discursive power by framing planning controversies on social media. Drawing on Weibo data from Guangzhou’s Big Banyan Tree controversy, it develops a 3A framework that combines social network analysis, sentiment analysis, and topic modelling. The analysis identifies how repeated interaction, emotional expression, issue expansion, and visual communication enable citizens to build discursive legitimacy and contest established planning narratives.
