Abstract

This article investigates how teleworkability is associated with heterogeneous relocation responses across demographic groups in the Netherlands. It asks whether flexible work changes migration networks differently for age, household, income, and occupational groups, and whether these differences reinforce or reduce existing spatial inequalities.

The study uses iterative proportional fitting and population-flow synthesis to reconstruct layered internal-migration networks from aggregate data. Network measures are then used to compare destination reach, origin diversity, spatial distance, and changes in regional hierarchy across demographic layers.

The paper contributes to remote-work and migration research by showing that the spatial consequences of teleworkability depend on who is able and willing to relocate, not simply on the aggregate prevalence of remote work.
